a bit of extra time

basketball practice recently started up for our high school boys and girls. due to the fact that we only have one gym, boys have been scheduled for practice right after school and the girls hit the court after them. this year, i have seen an interesting trend emerge with this small but tight-knit group of girls. rather than going home and coming back, they have taken to setting up shop in the hallway, complete with snacks, comfy clothes, blankets and a lot of laughter. on top of this, they are doing homework...together! while they beg me for candy each day during this time, it has allowed me a chance to not only get to know them better, but to see them relaxed and laughing, which isn't always the case during the regular school day. i have found myself genuinely looking forward to this "check in" time with them and have even made it my own habit to ask them prior to leaving for the day if they need any help with homework, or papers or life. the first couple of times they looked at me funny but now i can see the gears turning as they are beginning to realize that in all sincerity, i'm more than willing to offer that little bit of extra time...
